Flood irrigation

Flood irrigation is an ancient method of irrigating crops that is still commonly used. Water is delivered to the field by ditch or pipe for example, and is allowed to flow through the crop. Although flood irrigation is an effective method of irrigation, it is much less efficient than other options. It is estimated that only half of the water actually ends up irrigating the crop.
