Mealybugs are scale insects that feed on plant sap and also act as vector for several plant diseases. They attach themselves to the plant and secrete a powdery wax layer (hence their name). Saprophytic fungi growing on honeydew from mealybugs can cause a superficial peel blemish. Mealybugs are also the vector of the Banana streak virus.
