Mlali Mshia Wa Komba is the local name of a cultivar that belongs to a group of bananas called Mlali. Its name means Mlali with a monkey tail. This group of bananas is currently found only in East Africa and the neighbouring islands of Madagascar, Comoros, Zanzibar and Pemba. However, these bananas must have had Asian counterparts since molecular studies revealed a genetic kinship between Mlali bananas and Gros Michel and Cavendish bananas.
