Congolese farmer removing a banana plant infected with Xanthomonas wilt, commonly known as BXW. In the early days of the epidemic in East Africa, the recommendation was to uproot the entire mat, but studies later showed that the continuous removal of only the diseased stems (a technique called single diseased stem removal), coupled with measures to prevent re-infection, can reduce the incidence of the disease to negligible levels.
