Description
|
Phytoliths of Musa acuminata, one of the wild ancestors of cultivated bananas. Phytoliths, literally 'plant stones', are microscopic mineral inclusions. They form when silica from groundwater accumulates in plant tissues, where they acquire their distinct shape. As the plant decays, phytoliths are released into the soil. Banana phytoliths provide evidence of the crop's cultivation.

Wilting cooking bananas growing near dead or dying coconut trees in Furan, in the Madang Province of Papua New Guinea. The coconut trees are infected with the phytoplasma that is at the origin of an epidemic locally knows as 'Bogia Coconut Syndrome'. A phytoplasma was later found in the sick bananas and tentatively named Banana wilt associated phytoplasma (BWAP).
